Split system Air Conditioners have an outside condenser linked to an indoor fan coil unit by copper pipes and electrical wiring. The indoor device is either wall mounted or, when it comes to cassettes, is ceiling mounted. Each has electronic controls and a fan that flows either cool or warm air.
Split systems work by moving cold and hot air from one location to another. When super-heated under pressure, the outdoors unit (compressor) pressurises refrigerant gas which acts like a sponge. It soaks up any hot air in and transfers it outside whilst likewise taking in cool air from outdoors and moving it inside. Reverse cycle systems simply reverse that process to push the cold air out and the warm air in!
