Smoke Alarm Installation

When it comes to your home, nothing is more important than keeping your family and belongings safe and secure.
One of the most crucial steps you can take in creating that feeling of security is the installation of smoke alarms throughout your home. In fact, it is a requirement in Western Australia that all residential properties being sold, rented or hire fitted out with mains powered smoke alarms.

Hard-wired smoke alarms can be easily installed by a licensed electrician and provide a higher level of safety compared to the traditional battery powered smoke alarms. The most important one being that you don’t have to worry about changing the battery out of your smoke alarm again. Wired smoke alarms run through your home’s electricity, and even come equipped with a back up battery pack in case of a power outage.

The Western Australian Guidelines for smoke Alarms at a glance:

To reduce fire related injuries and save lives, legislation was introduced that made it mandatory for main powered smoke alarms to be installed in all new residential buildings, or any residential buildings prior to sale, rent or hire.

When installing the smoke alarms the following requirements must be met:

  • Fire Alarms must be permanently connected to the main power supply and be positioned throughout the home in compliance with the building code of Australia.
  • Must be in good working order. Must be checked regularly to ensure that they are still working effectively.
  • For homes built after 2015- All smoke detectors in the home must be interconnected.

The amount of fire alarms required for your home is largely dependent on the size of your residence:

Singe Level Homes

Installed on or near the ceiling in any hallways that lead to bedrooms. If there is no hallway, in area near the bedroom.

Multi-level Homes

Smoke alarms must be installed on every level of the home, even if the level is just a carport or laundry. It is standard practice that these smoke alarms are be installed along the paths of travel (ie stairwells) people will take to evacuate the building.

Guest Homes

For guest houses and boarding houses, you must install smoke detectors in every bedroom in the property, as well as any hallways or corridors.

The only time that battery powered smoke alarms are still considered acceptable is in the following circumstances:

  • There is no main power connected to the dwelling
  • When there is no safe location to hide the wiring necessary to power the smoke alarms (for example, a concrete ceiling)
  • For any other circumstance, the use of a battery powered smoke alarm must be approved by your local council.

While these are the specific regulations laid out by the government, it is highly recommended that all rooms in your home be fitted with wired smoke detectors, to increase the overall safety of your home.
